The Northern Circuit Route

The Longest Journey. The Quietest Trail. The Greatest Views.

If Kilimanjaro had a secret side, this would be it. The Northern Circuit isn’t just a route it’s a 360° odyssey around the tallest freestanding mountain on Earth. As the newest and longest route on Kilimanjaro, it gives you the rare chance to experience the mountain’s hidden rhythms: lush rainforests, windswept alpine plateaus, silent northern slopes, and untouched volcanic valleys.

Over 8 days, you’ll circle Kilimanjaro like the sun, watching the terrain and your spirit change with each step. The climb is long, but never rushed. The pace? Gentle. The reward? Immense. This is the only route where you see all four faces of Kilimanjaro and meet almost no other trekkers along the way.

Umbwe Route

The Wildest Way Up Kilimanjaro

The Umbwe Route is Kilimanjaro’s boldest trail a quiet path that begins deep in the southern forest, climbs steep and swift, and rewards you with the most dramatic views on the mountain.

For the first two days, you’ll barely see another soul. Just your team, the trees, and the mountain.

Rongai Route

Experience Kilimanjaro from the path less traveled.

The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro’s best-kept secret. Starting on the remote northern slope near the Kenyan border it winds through a peaceful pine forest, across highland meadows, and past the haunting, jagged peak of Mawenzi. Unlike the busy southern routes, you won’t be sharing this trail with crowds. This is where you go if you want space, silence, and deep connection with the mountain.

Each day on Rongai gives you something different. One morning you’ll wake beside sunrise-lit Mawenzi, another you’ll gaze at the endless horizon stretching into Kenya. Look for rare wildlife like the shy Bearded Vulture and the Giant Groundsels alien-like plants found nowhere else on earth. This is your private path to Africa’s rooftop.

Climb Kilimanjaro

The Original Route. The Only One with Huts.

Looking for a gentle introduction to Africa’s highest peak? The Climb Kilimanjaro-nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” is the oldest and coziest path up Mount Kilimanjaro. It was the first trail to ever lead a climber to the top in 1889, and today it remains a favorite for good reason.

This scenic trail winds through every climate zone on the mountain from tropical rainforest to alpine desert to glacial summit. And unlike other routes where you sleep in tents, Marangu is the only route with dorm-style mountain huts to keep you warm and dry especially useful during Tanzania’s rainy seasons (March-May & late December).

Machame Route

The Bold & Beautiful Way Up Kilimanjaro

Known as “The Whiskey Route” strong, scenic, and unforgettable.

This is the classic climb. The one people talk about. The one you’ll remember forever. At EXG Safaris, we’ve guided thousands of travelers safely up Machame and watched them stand proudly on the Roof of Africa.

Lemosho Route

THE JOURNEY TO THE TOP OF AFRICA

If you could walk through every world in one week lush green forest, rocky volcanic plateaus, icy glaciers you’d be walking the Lemosho Route.

This is Kilimanjaro at its best. Wild. Beautiful. Achievable.

Lemosho is known for its peaceful paths, stunning views, and high summit success. It starts on the quiet western slope and crosses through all of the mountain’s magical climate zones. It’s also the trail that brought an 86-year-old woman to the top of Africa. So yes, you can do this too.
